Genetically modified organism, well known as GMO has been receiving bad publicity. Is this fair? Yes, because this is such a thing called free media. To get things in perspective let’s discuss the pros and cons of GMO.
Cons:
-it could be “toxic” and we don’t know the effect that may come to humans. New allergies are beginning to emerge.
-as the crops progress faster, there will be “superweeds” which is stronger and harder for farmer to maintain
Pros:
– we need to feed the world and we don’t have enough supplies. GMO seems to be a faster way to solve this. The age of science has arrived and we must accept these changes wether we like it or not.
-no need for pesticides, lessening the bugs around us.
Monsanto, a company of more than a hundred years old spent billions of dollars for GMO research. They supply different crops that is GMO. Ag-biotechnology is their expertise. Farmers buy Monsanto seeds because their costs decrease and their profits increase. If they didn’t, farmers wouldn’t buy them again. Wordlwide, Monsanto has been a big name to watch out for, the good and the bad.
Where do we find this non GMO products?
Unfortunately or fortunately (?), 80% of our food is already under GMO. There are product that claims to be organic but is not regulated. Unless we go to food suppliers that are reliable when they say they are organic, we could be sure that this is non-GMO. Growing your own food too is another way.
